The day had finally come. He'd been forced to leave. Well, it had to happen eventually, but did he really have to have a purpose? Come on. He would be perfectly happy living on his own somewhere in some town doing as he pleased, but no, you have to do something with your life, Bryan; go train Pokemon. If bribery hadn't been involved he probably would have just left. Now, though, he was wondering if it was even worth it.
The scruffy young man-- Bryan-- decided it was time to get a move on. He'd been slumped up against a tree outside the lab all morning staring off into space, and now his back was starting to hurt. Stretching his arms above his head and cracking his back, he hauled himself to his feet and lifted his sling backpack over his shoulder. It was kind of small, but he figured it'd do.
As he approached the door, he contemplated simply barging in, but that would probably end terribly, as fun as it would be to kick the door open. Get him dragged around by his ear just like all those years ago when he was small. So, grudgingly, he balled up a fist and knocked three times on the laboratory door. As nice as it would have been to have looked the least bit enthusiastic, he just couldn't mask the slightly bored undertones in his expression.
Maybe it could pass as just having woken up too early this morning. Yeah, that was the ticket.

For a few long minutes, nothing happened. Nobody was close enough to the door to hear knocking, which was exactly why they had installed the ringing sound that accompanied people opening the door and walking in. Finally, a Nidoking walked through a door within the building and spotted someone standing outside of the glass doors, apparently waiting for someone to let him in. With a throaty chuckle, the purple Pokémon made his way over to the door and carefully pulled it open, gesturing to the human to come inside with a fanged grin. As the door opened, the chime sounded to summon an actual Professor, and in moments Professor Beech came clacking into the room.
"Welcome!" she said with a smile, adjusting her glasses as they fell down her nose. "You're a brand-new trainer, correct? Come to get your starter? Well, you're in luck, we just hatched the newest batch a few days ago, and they're already excited to go on all kinds of adventures!"
The Nidoking, sensing that he wasn't needed any more at the moment, lumbered off slowly and entered a doorway towards the back of the laboratory.

For a minute, he once again contemplated just barging in, but then it occured to him that, if no one came to the door, he could just up and leave. It'd give him an excuse to do as he pleased. As he was toying with that lovely idea, however, a massive purple beast of a pokemon opened the door. Well. That was interesting.
Maybe this wouldn't be so bad? Nah. He still wasn't believing that tromping through wilderness was really that snazzy.
Hands in his pockets, he cautiously stepped inside the lab, flashing an odd sort of grin at the Nidoking, the kind you give someone you're not really sure about but figure hey, maybe they're not as imposing as they seem. It didn't take long for someone else to appear, though-- a rather small professor-looking person who seemed to have enough sunshine to make up for his lack of enthusiasm.
"Nah, I'm here to take over the world," he replied evenly, taking the moment to look around just a little more. Hopefully this professor wasn't one of those people that took everything too seriously.

The professor's eyebrows shot up, but she assumed - hopefully correctly - that he was being sarcastic. Instead of reacting strangely, she motioned to the large touchscreen across from the doors and said, "Well, you'll probably want to take a Pokémon, then. They would be quite useful for that sort of endeavor." Her cool response probably meant that she was actually well-rested for a change, but this starting trainer wouldn't know the difference since this was the first time he'd been to the lab.
"There are many different kinds to begin with here, but all of them will prove useful on any sort of journey, at least to begin with. It is always a good idea to collect a variety of Pokémon for a good team, with a variety of types and attacks."

Well, he wasn't about to be arrested for that statement. This was good. "Good to know," he said, acknowledging her tip.
He strode across the room to the touch screen she'd motioned to and started toying with it. They had a rather large selection for a lab-- nice variety if he had anything to say about it. None of them in particular screamed at him, but then again, nothing ever really did. Thinking back for a moment, he remembered something about pokemon having different natures-- personalities. Which made sense.
And after all, that was really the deciding factor. He wasn't ecstatic about being stuck in the middle of nowhere with a complete prat.
After he'd singled out what he deemed the most promising three of the fifteen pokemon available, Bryan turned his attention back to the professor. "Ah, would it be possible to meet a few before I pick one?" If she was going to play it cool, so was he. "Treecko, Totodile, and Torchic'll be the ones," he continued, recalling the names from the screen. If his memory was worth anything, they were each one of the what were considered to be the 'basic' types. Hey, just because he liked to goof off and sleep in school doesn't mean he didn't learn anything.

"Certainly." Taking over the touchscreen, Beech pressed a series of buttons, causing the screen to slide away to reveal a series of tubes. Three Poké Balls popped out, and she caught them with practiced ease, swiftly hitting the buttons to release the Pokémon. The Treecko looked excited to be out of his ball, and it sat down on the floor like a puppy and stared up at the strange human, tilting its head. Alternately, the Totodile blinked a few times at the bright lights of the lab, then walked over to the doors and laid down, intending to take a nap in the sunlight. The Torchic hopped up to the trainer, cried out at him, flapping its wings, then came closer and began curiously pecking at his shoes.

Well, he was glad he asked, because none of the three were really promising. The totodile, like him, was a lazy bum-- and there was only room for one lazy person. Any more than that and nothing is going to get done (or everything is going to get done in the wrong way, or the most obscure, complicated way possible, because that's just how lazy people roll). The treecko was... Well... It stared. It seemed a little too interested in him, honestly. Either that or it was new to the world and just didn't know what to make of the person that was standing in front of it. The torchic at least seemed a little lively, if a bit curious. To be honest his first thought was dunce, but Bryan, stop being so overly critical.
"I think I'll take the torchic along with me," he said after a moment of evaluating the three. He didn't know why, but it seemed like he was drawn to the chicken the most. Maybe it was because it had the courage to come up and start pecking at the shoelaces of someone that could easily punt it across the room but was choosing not to because he wasn't an evil, evil person like that. Yeah, that seemed about right.

Professor Beech nodded approvingly. "A wise choice of starter Pokémon," she commended. She tapped each of the three Pokémon on the head with their respective Poké Balls, returning them to their space-savingly small size, and put the two that were not chosen back into the computer system, closing the screen after them. Once this was settled, she placed the Poké Ball she was still holding down on an unoccupied desk and walked through the door through which she originally came, returning shortly with a generic beige backpack.
"Here you are; your new partner and a few items to help you out along your journey. I suggest perhaps using some of the money to purchase more Poké Balls in the Pokémon Center's shop if you feel you might catch a lot, or perhaps a few more Potions would help more." Once she had handed over the items, she clasped her hands together and smiled. "Will you be needing anything else today?"

"Thanks," he said, accepting the items and slinging the brown bag over his shoulder. It looked kind of funny, with two backpacks, but it'd have to do for the time being. He could do some inventory management later. He started to examine the pokeball when the professor asked another question. He thought for a moment before looking up and responding. "Nah, I think this'll be all. Thanks," he turned to start leaving, then paused and looked over his shoulder. "Oh. Name's Bryan, by the way. Never really was good with introductions," he said. It was true; normally he forgot to introduce himself. Some of his best friends hadn't learned his name until up to a week later because he'd never bothered to mention it.
Without another word, he pushed open the door and stepped out into the snow.
