To enter a Contest, a trainer need only enter the Contest Hall and show the attendant their Contest Pass. Anyone may receive a Contest Pass from the Starter Laboratory in Namino City, or they may purchase one for a small fee from any Pokémon Center.
The Contest Hall is located in Potassiville. There are a total of three Contest ranks. The ranks are as such: Simple, Moderate, and Challenging. Trainers must have the Simple ribbon of any Contest type to move on to the Moderate Contest of the same type, and a trainer must obtain the Moderate ribbon to get into the Challenging contest of the corresponding type.
The way contests work is thus: Each trainer enters the hall, shows off their Pokémon to the judges, then leaves and comes back for the Appeal round. Though it's tough to win an Appeal round with only sub-par writing, it is possible if the Pokémon's attack combinations are creative enough and if the description is understood fully. Attacks that have some sort of effect during Contests in the games are used as a mere framework for how the opponent's Pokémon react. For example, if an attack is used that creates a large amount of bubbles and is meant to make the other Pokémon nervous, then some of the less-confident Pokémon watching and waiting to participate might lose their nerve and fail to perform.
The winner is determined by a mixture of appeal round scoring and the Pokémon's actual contest stats. The winner receives a Ribbon of the appropriate type as well as a cash prize that varies depending on which Contest rank you participated in. Runner-ups get a consolation prize of some sort as well.
