A character here at DisplacedEarth has several options for what they can do. It is actually possible to just have a character that has absolutely nothing to do with Pokémon that just sits in their home or goes to school or wanders a town, but it's probably going to get boring that way for most people. If you don't want to have a character that does nothing, here are your options! Keep in mind that any character can do whatever they like, so a Trainer can do Contest challenges and a Breeder is perfectly within their rights to challenge a Gym. These are just guidelines for the different titled occupations a character can have. The first and simplest option is to be a Pokémon Trainer, where they get a Pokémon at the starter laboratory in Namino City, train their Pokémon to get stronger and fight other Pokémon, and challenge the Gym Leaders for their Badges and a right to stand before the Pokémon League. A Pokémon Trainer gets a Pokédex and a Pokésource when they get their first Pokémon at the starter lab, as well as a few items in a sturdy bag that they can take along with them.
A similar way to go is to be a Pokémon Coordinator. The Coordinators train their Pokémon to use their attacks to make the most attractive display they can make with their resources, as well as feed their Pokémon Poffins to improve the traits they wish for them to show off. They must travel to the Contest Hall in Potassiville to show their Pokémon to the judges and challenge other Pokémon for Ribbons. If they gain enough Ribbons of the same type, they may challenge the final Contest. Like Trainers, Coordinators may receive a Pokémon in Namino City along with a Pokédex and a Pokésource and a bag containing some useful items.
Pokémon Breeders generally begin with a Pokémon from Namino City as well, though there are rumors that they can get Pokémon from other places as well if they show their official breeding license to the right people. For the most part, a Breeder does just that; they breed Pokémon. Whether they do this for a specific Trainer to use the specially-bred Pokémon, sell their eggs before or after they're hatched, or keep the Pokémon for an elite army of well-bred Pokémon is up to the player! Just like Coordinators and Trainers, Breeders that show up to Namino City's starter laboratory receive a bag of goodies.
Scientists are a little bit different from the rest of the occupations. They can have Pokémon, and are free to travel, fight, challenge Gyms and Contests, and breed their Pokémon to their heart's content, but their main purpose is to further technology to help everyone. A scientist must choose a main thing to research, which they will work on whenever inspiration strikes or when they've been sitting in a dark laboratory staring at other people's research for hours on end. The entire point of the scientist's occupation is to make life better, so most of the things that need to be researched are inventions to solve current problems. There are other places a scientist can be used, but they have to get to these places themselves and offer to help if they wish to do so. A scientist may begin with a Pokémon rather than getting one from the laboratory, but the Pokémon must be level 5 or below and can only be a Baby or Basic Pokémon. Otherwise, they may also travel to Namino City and receive a Pokémon and a bag of useful items.
