Coop was nervous, though he'd never have admitted it. He'd gotten a bit lost looking for the Namino Lab, and had to ask for directions twice. But he'd gotten here, and here was where everything turned official. Here was the last stop before his journey to become champion started. At that thought, he smiled, and realized that the journey was already started, and had been since he took his foot off the dock in Vermillion.
With one last deep breath and exhale, he pushed open the door and stepped inside, taking in the large display across the way. Taking in the starter options that were displayed.

Kids. Always kids, ain't it. Beech knows I ain't good with them, and I'm pretty sure even her Pokemon know that too. Then again, I guess I ain't in a circumstance that offers me a choice, huh. The veteran researcher left his work at his desk after hearing the alert of a new incoming Trainer, and could already tell what he was in for just by looking at one of the security camera feeds. Land's sake, when I was their age I was befriending 'em more than I was having 'em handed to me. Times've changed. Must be rambling to myself again.. He kept pondering as he went on his way to the main lobby.
The door slid open, indicating the old man's arrival. "See anythin' you like?" The man was leaned up against the doorway by his shoulder, offering the child the solemn gaze he was accustomed to. A closer observation of the trainer-to-be brought up even more speculation from Buckeye. These new folk always end up bein' younger and younger. Then again, guess it wasn't as hostile as it was back home. Tarnation, I've got to stop thinkin' so much about this. Just gotta help 'em out, that's all. His contemplation lead his solemn expression to have an element of pensiveness mixed in it. "Consider yourself lucky; you came in pretty early, and every one of those Pokemon you see there are all in stock."

Coop almost jumped a bit as the door opened, then steeled himself, turning to meet the older man's gaze.
"I, uh... I have to admit that I don't recognize many of them. I did well in my studies, but back home, the studies were focused on those common and native. I watched the League Challenges, but most of those were using fully evolved pokemon. Is there anyway you can show me what they'd look like fully evolved?" He shrugged, seemingly at a loss for words. "I've never been particularly fond of Squirtle and Bulbasaur, but it looks like Charmander isn't an option, and I don't recognize anything else but Gastly."

"Gastly, huh? Wouldn't peg a lively-lookin' kid like yourself to be interested in the dealings of the ethereal. Still, you're recognizin' a Pokemon that'll give you a real advantage over a lot of early Trainers, if that's what you're interested in becoming. Judgin' by the look in your eyes, I get the feelin' that's exactly the case." He paused, realizing he must have been droning on, and walked over to the screen, pressing a few buttons and sliding a few bars. The menu navigation ended quickly, as the images of the basic-level Pokemon onscreen were quickly replaced by their next immediate forms.
"See anythin' else that catches your eye? Go ahead and give me a shout if you see something. Gonna move onto what you're really asking for in a moment." After letting the first evolutions linger on the screen, Buckeye navigated through the touch screen quickly and effortlessly, with the images of Pokemon changing again, into their final forms. "Now, assuming you've still got your eye out for that ghostly poison puff, I should tell you first that you might wanna find a friend, 'cause to make sure that it reaches this form, you've gotta trade it back and forth. It'll evolve if you trade it away first, but if you ain't doing it with someone you trust, it might be the last time you see it. But hey, considering the research boom going on as of late, maybe they'll pull out something that can change that old fashioned method." Buckeye was a talkative fellow.

Cooper shakes his head rapidly, looking up at the stage 1 pokemon and scanning through them before realizing that, nope, he still didn't recognize any. "Not interested in Gastly. One of those gave my little sister nightmares for months, and I'd hardly want to cause her more nightmares if I ever went home to visit."
As the Stage 2 pokemon showed up on screen though, Coop's eyes flicked through them; Fire Monkey, Penguin, Snake, Otter With a giant horn, Sheep, Dragonite (Lance had a half dozen of the things that he used extensively, and that was just awesome), Ice Cream Cone, Punching Chicken, Giant Lizard, Crocodile, Typhlo- Here Coop's eyes widened, remembering the last gym match he'd gone to see.
It had been a challenger from Johto, fresh off the SS Aqua, facing off against Surge's 8th Badge Team. The trainer hadn't needed more than the Typhlosion that had gotten off the ship with him. The sheer level of power that the pokemon showed off as it leaped into battle with an eruption of fire and knocked out the entire team with an ease he'd never seen before.
"I'll take that one though." he said, pointing up toward the Typhlosion. "It's a fire type, looks pretty beast, and most importantly doesn't have hands that can get it through most doors and into trouble. Plus, they're awesome."

"Kid, you've gotta know that looks ain't everything in a Pokemon," Buckeye had a somewhat perplexed look on his face. He's said this same thing to so many other fledgling trainers, and it's never once failed to catch him by surprise. "You'll find reliability exists in all forms of Pokemon. And, provided you raise yours right, they won't be likely to wander all over the place. Clever thought, though. Most wouldn't think to deal with a concern like that in that way." The senior professor chuckled to himself. "You ain't here for a lecture, though. You're here for this." Tinkering with the buttons on the side of the monitor, Buckeye let the screen slide over to the side, revealing a vending machine stocked with Pokeballs for every Pokemon species provided by the laboratory. Another few presses yielded one of the Balls being ejected with a loud 'pop!' The Ball quickly released its contents: the timid Cyndaquil, a Pokemon holding an easy contrast with the beastly Typhlosion. The Fire Mouse glanced up at its new trainer-to-be, regarding him with a display of fear. The creature quickly hid its head beneath its front paws, and curled itself into a ball. It appears to be using Defense Curl, but it doesn't have the strength nor the knowledge to do it properly enough to actually gain anything from it. The flames spewing from its back seem to be glowing more brightly than they would otherwise, indicating its shock. "Heh. Don't worry about the little ol' thing, all of these Pokemon'd been hatched at a local farm, and it's expected that some of 'em might never even have seen a proper human until now.""Now, given the look in yer eyes.." Buckeye approached and pulled open a drawer containing blank identification cards, very closely resembling credit cards. "You'll be lookin' for one of these, in particular. We're going t'have to process you and fill these out, of course, but just have a look." He extracted a solid blue card from the drawer, one that clearly and prominently displayed the letters "YOUSO LEAGUE TRAINER PASS" at the top.

"A well trained pokemon might listen, but a well disciplined child is supposed to listen too, and I have enough younger siblings that I know telling them to not stand on top of the monkey bars isn't enough; you turn around to push one on the swings and next thing you know they're on top of the monkey bars having a pretend sword fight with sticks." Coop shrugged, bending down and extending a hand out in the general direction of the Cyndaquil. "Did my registration not make it here in advance? I mailed it from kanto about a month ago."

"Guess it all depends on their personalities, huh. Anyway, if anything was sent to us, we ain't got it yet. Don't worry, it ain't an ordeal. All we have to do is take a picture of you, get your name, and we can get you started. Now, kid, I don't have any bit of your identity yet, so I'm gonna need your full name." While talking, the professor moved over to an old-fashioned looking camera, gesturing to the white chair it pointed to. "Go on, kid; you can make friendly with the Cyndaquil soon as you're done."
The timid Cyndaquil was slowly coaxed out of its ball. It looked at the hand, however, and shook slightly before slowly padding up to it, curious. The Pokemon began sniffing away at it, before tilting its head as some sort of indicator of confusion.

"My name is Cooper Williams, with a home city of Vermillion, hailing from Kanto. Date of birth is October 17th." Coop said loudly before dropping his voice lower to offer reassurances to the Cyndaquil, gently petting its head before he stood up slowly. Striding over to the chair and sitting in it, Coop took a moment to run his fingers through his hair and settled in, looking directly at the camera. "Any other information you need for my license?"

Buckeye snapped a focused shot on Coop, managing to get a fairly decent-looking photo of him. However, the photo was not processed by the camera itself. The nearby card machine took care of that as it prepared a card with the new Trainer's picture on it. Buckeye stepped over to the device, typing on a keyboard interface at the side. The machine swiftly processed and popped out a fully-established Trainer Card, with Cooper Williams proudly inscribed on its surface. "No, I reckon that's about everything."
He passed by the little Cyndaquil, which had calmed considerably thanks to Coop's persistence in comforting it. "Looks like you got the little guy to simmer down. Good on you." As he said this, he reached at the ground for the emptied dispenser Poke Ball, using it to withdraw the Fire Type. Quietly proceeding to the nearby cabinet filled with Trainer Starter Packs, he also picked up one of the bags and placed the Ball within. "..Hm, yep, that's about everythin'."
He approached Coop, holding the credit card-like pass in one hand, and the backpack in the other. "All yours, kid."
(I'm assuming you'd like the Shiny Cyndaquil option?)

"Thank you sir. I hope that you have a fine day." Coop said as he collected the bag. Walking back out into the lobby, he fished his new pokemon's ball out of his bag, crouching near the door. He let his pokemon out of its ball, smiling at it and giving him a brief pet on the top of his head.
"Hey little guy, my name's Cooper, and I've picked you to be my starter. My dream is to see you become super strong and together with all the pokemon I'm gonna catch, we're going to become Youso League champions. Are you up for that?"
The cyndaquil stared at him for a moment, seemingly thinking. After a moment it seemed to come to a decision and reached out, tugging on his pant leg before bolting out of the lab into the city.
Coop was first shocked, then felt like laughing as he ran after his new pokemon. "Wait up, Cyndaquil! I still haven't given you a nickname!"
(I spent 4 hours doing an animated sprite, only to have it turn out shiny on Kitsu's thing, and spent a chunk of time recoloring. I'll stick with the shiny, just because I don't mind having my Cyndaquil end up as a magenta Typhlosion.)

Buckeye nodded to Coop as he left the lobby. Looking out from the glass window, he could see the new trainer and his Cyndaquil flee off to Namino City. "Heh. Best not fly up too high, kid." He began to ponder, going on to himself about how all youth can be reckless. And all youth can end up gettin' themselves ensnared in some serious calamities. Taking a gaze at the clock, the professor realized what was to come. The local press would be here very, very soon for an interview. Walking back to his room, he made a reserved sigh. He never was one for the media, but it's not as though he had much choice. You received a Pokémon!
