She'd never been inside of a pokemon lab before. For a moment she was stunned by the sheer amount of new information to take in. Polished chrome surfaces, blinking lights, strange machines whose purpose was unknown to her but which looked very impressive. Yuki stood in the middle of the doorway for a moment dazed by the information overload before something important caught her eye.
A large screen, full of the pictures of different pokemon, no doubt the ones available for selection by new trainers. Such as herself, well hopefully herself. Suddenly unaware of everything else in the room she wandered over to get a better look. There were so many different kinds, a truly impressive selection, all of them interesting in their own way. Ah there was treeko, dratini, squirtle... and some she was not so familiar with. A small otter pokemon, one that looked like a grass snake, and....
She squinted her eyes slightly to make sure she was seeing this right. Was that an... icecream cone? How curious. She'd never seen that one before.

Eventually, one of the laboratory assistants came out of the back room, since it seemed that poor Beech was napping and Buckeye was off doing whatever it was he did when he disappeared for hours at a time. This particular assistant was very young, actually appearing to be around fifteen years old, but she looked competent. She was accompanied by a shiny pink Ampharos.
"Hello there!" she said to the young soon-to-be trainer. "Do you need any help choosing a Pokemon, or are you ready to pick one out now?" The Ampharos looked distinctly uninterested in Yuki, but was ready to assist her trainer.

"Oh? Oh yes hello." Yuki turned around and greeted this new person with a small smile and a nod of her head. How odd she'd been expecting someone older, this girl only looked a little younger than she was. Still it was heartening, if this girl could be a professor then Yuki could certainly be a trainer. And she had the most wonderful Ampharos she'd seen, such a lovely unique coloration. "My name is Yuki, ah I was looking to get my trainer's license today. If it isn't too much trouble." she said softly before looking back at the screen.
"I know most of these pokemon but these three..." she gestured to the vanillite, the snivy, and the oshawatt on the screen. "I've never seen them before. What are their names?" she asked politely.

"Well... the blue and white one is called Oshawott, and it's a Water-type. The green one is Snivy, a grass-type. And the third one is an Ice-type named Vanillite. All three of them - and all of the others - are able to evolve twice and each is a lovely choice of Pokémon to begin a journey with!" responded the assistant, who would have been too flattered to speak properly had Yuki's assumption of her being a professor had been out loud.
"I started with a Mareep, as you can see." Her voice hinted of pride in her decision, even though she had chosen her Pokemon by accident. That, however, was a story for another time.

"Oh yes, I'm from Sinnoh and I've seen Mareep quite often. Yours is absolutely lovely." she said with a smile. "I've never seen an Ampharos that color before. And it seems so well trained. Ah but yes, um..."
She turned her attention back to the screen, musing over her choices once more. "May I...I mean I think I might be interested in the Vanillite?" she asked absently, as though she were talking more to herself than the girl in front of her. It just looked so soft and squishy and was the most lovely color. Like freshly fallen snow on a clear day. Yuki had always had a rather large soft spot for ice types, and this was one she'd never seen anywhere before now. She just... kind of wanted to hold it in her arms and take it everywhere.

The assistant practically bounced to the machine, punching a few buttons and advancing through a menu or two to cause the screen itself to shift, revealing some tubes that one of the interns liked to joke was where the "Internets" came through to the lab, but nobody ever laughed with him. Instead of the world wide web, a single Pokè Ball fell out. Luckily, the assistant was ready to catch it this time.
"Well, prepare to meet your new partner!" she told Yuki excitedly as she popped the ball open to free its occupant. A little white Pokémon with blue eyes and a blue mouth appeared, blinking at the sudden light. "Nilll? Nillite." The Vanillite looked up at Yuki curiously as it spoke, as if it was wondering who she was.

"Oh." She gasped softly because seeing it in person was different from just looking at it on a screen. Such soft blue eyes and a cute little voice and it glittered slightly in the fluorescent lab light like a snow covered hill. Eyes shining hopefully she crouched down in front of the little pokemon and tentatively extended her hand. "Hello, would... you like to be my pokemon?" she asked, waiting to see if the little ice pokemon would come over of its own accord.
Although she wasn't actually touching it she could feel the air around it was slightly colder than the rest of the lab, though not unbearably so. Her first pokemon, her first few steps. Towards finding out what she would be capable of in the wider world. Towards discovering who she really was. And it would all start here with her first partner. She was practically beaming at the thought, and her whole body seemed to radiate a sense of excitement and well intentioned kindness.

The tiny Pokémon looked confused, then seemed to understand what the lady had asked. "Van vanill!" it cried out, smiling up at Yuki. Clearly it was raring for an adventure.
"Well, then, that's taken care of! Now, if you'll just have a seat over here for just a moment.." The assistant gestured towards the chair across from the old-fashioned camera and moved behind it to wait. "Once the photo is done, your license will print and you'll be all set!"

Overjoyed she scooped the small pokemon in her arms. It was just as lovely and cool to the touch as she'd expected and she walked over to the the chair and had a seat, letting the vanillite sit on her lap as she did so.
"Of course, whenever you're ready then." she said, smiling for the camera. "We're going to have so many lovely adventures I just know it.

The assistant quickly snapped the photo, then moved to the machine to retrieve the newly printed card. "Here you are, you'll need this. Do you need a breeding license or contest pass? Now would be a good time to pick those up if you want them." She handed Yuki the card, then went for the drawer near the printer to be ready to grab the other templates if they were needed. The bored and forgotten Ampharos decided finally that it must be nap time and curled up on the floor to enjoy it while it lasted.

"Well, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to pick up a contest pass as well." she replied, looking a little uncertain. Contests had been deemed a more acceptable pastime for young women in her household but they'd never really held much appeal for her. However just because she was a trainer now didn't mean she was going to give up on being a lady. Besides, supposing she met someone on the road who enjoyed contests? It would be a nice thing to do with a friend. "So alright, I'll take one of those as well. Is there anything special I need to provide?"
While she was discussing the logistics of obtaining her passes, the Vanillite drifted out of her arms and decided to settle on the Ampharos' head while it was napping, apparently curious about the much larger pokemon.

Ampharos sleepily opened one eye, saw the little Vanillite atop her head, and closed her eye again. She was too sleepy to mind such a light weight upon her head, even if it was making the air a little chillier around itself. The assistant, meanwhile, busied herself with putting the five-colored card into the machine and pressing the necessary buttons. After some whirring and a few beeps, the card popped back out with Yuki's name, photo, and a bit of other information printed on it. Smiling, the assistant walked into the back room and returned with a bag, which she handed to Yuki along with the pair of cards. "Here you are, then; your starter bag, your pass, and your license. Vanillite's Poké Ball is in there, too; I figured you'd rather keep him outside and bond with him, but it's there if you want to put him back." Yuki receives a Vanillite!

(nickname) Species: Vanillite Gender: Male Level: 5 (0/5) Happiness: 40/100 Type: Egg Group(s): Mineral Nature: Docile HP: 20/20 Ice Body Icicle Spear | Harden | Powder Snow (I got a shiny? Hell yes ^^) Yuki takes the pack offered to her and collects her pokemon from atop the ampharos' head, smiling gently as she did so. "Now now, you shouldn't bother pokemon when they're trying to nap." she said. The vanillite didn't seem to mind the soft scolding as he curled up happily in her arms regardless. Apparently bonding had already begun with these two. "Thank you so much. You've no idea how long I've wanted to do this." she said, tucking her new trainer's card into her backpack and slinging it over her shoulder. "Is there anything else I should know before I leave?"

"Well.. Actually, yes. Since you're starting with an Ice-type, you might actually be able to head to the Cadmium Gym first, provided you train that little guy well. The leader there uses Dragon-type Pokémon. And.. just be careful. Things aren't as safe as they used to be, and it would probably be in your best interest to always be ready to send out a Pokémon. You know, just in case." After her short monologue, the assistant smiled again. "You should be fine; I have a feeling you and this Vanillite will have a very strong bond, and that always helps."
Ampharos decided to awaken, yawning and stretching almost like a large cat before standing upright. She gave a small cry and a wave to the new trainer as she blinked her sleepy eyes.

A dragon type trainer. Her first opponent would be a dragon. The idea of it sent a little thrill of excitement running up and down her spine. Dragon types were some of the fiercest pokemon out there. The prospect of facing one right off the bat was both scary and exciting and suddenly she couldn't wait to set out and start training.
"Thank you for the advice. I promise to be careful. I'm sure Vail can handle anything that comes up." she said, tickling her pokemon under its chin. "I guess I want to start on route 2 then. Thank you once more. And please take care." she waved as she headed out the door to the laboratory and set out on what she was sure would be a grand adventure.
