Nathan's journey was about to begin. This was the biggest step of his life, something that took him many years to convince his parents that he was ready to take this next step, and what does he do? He plays a prank, goofs off, doesn't read a thing about Pokemon, and causes more mischief than ever before. At least, that's how his last last week of not being a Pokemon Trainer went. The day he would receive his first Pokemon started just like any other day. He slept in late and acted like the inexperienced, lazy boy his parents knew and loved.
Once he woke up, he thought of the perfect way to say goodbye to his parents... a prank! He sneaked a toy spider into both of their glasses of milk, and caused their scrambled eggs to explode into their faces. However, unlike most days, where they would yell at him while he snickered, when they looked to see his face, he was on the brink of tears. So, instead of scolding the boy, his parents embraced him and laughed at the prank and took it as the joke it was.
After that touching moment, his mother managed to be strong enough to say, "You were never one to cry in situations like this. I know you're nervous and that leaving home is hard. I'll miss you more than you'll miss me, but I know deep inside my heart that you'll be safe and that you'll find your way back home one of these days. You just have to finish your quest first. I know you'll make your father and I proud."
Nathan's father had the exact same idea as his wife, but he also had his own words of encouragement to say to his son. "Look, son. There comes a time in his life in which a man must find the answer to his own life questions on his own. They means of doing so depends on the man himself, and you have shown us that you are ready to move on to the next step in your life. You are always welcome to come home, and you don't need to be afraid. You'll have your new Pokemon friends, as well as new human friends, and they'll be there for you. Now, be a man for your old man and show me that happy attitude that your mother and I love you for!"
With the encouragement of both of his parents, Nathan wiped his tears away from the corners of his own eyes. With that, Nathan started laughing at his own prank, saying, "That was a pretty good joke, wasn't it?" His parents rolled their eyes realizing that some things about his son, whether they liked it or not, that were never going to change. After that comment, he grabbed his bag, put it over his back, embraced his parents once more, and walked out of the door.
He then walked through the farms remembering all of the many pranks he played, and he remembered all of the good times he had with the Miltank and other Pokemon. There were so many Miltank in the barn that Nathan believed that he was going to miss them the most. After waving goodbye to all of his Pokemon friends, he walked away from his home and headed out to the first leg of his journey- the starter Pokemon.
After about a half an hour walk, Nathan reached the ships taking him from the Unova region to Youso. After this trip, which took twelve hours, (technically fourteen hours because of Nathan's inexperience) and it took another hour to reach the lab that was in Namino City. The ache in his feet didn't detour Nathan from his final destination as he ran towards the lab door. He gave an excited sigh, reached for the door and opened it. "Hello, is anyone here? It's me, Nathan, from the region of Unova! I'm here from my first Pokemon!" He waited patiently for a response which he knew shouldn't take too long.
