After receiving his first Pokemon, Dratini, Nathan started the first leg of his journey by going through Route 1. Being very unaware of what types of Pokemon lie ahead, Nathan and his Dratini keep their focus on the direction in front of them. "Yo, Dratini," Nathan said catching the attention of his slithering Pokemon. "What do you think we're going to find here?" If the Dragon-Type Pokemon had arms, he would probably be shrugging right now.
After asking the question, Nathan's stomach started to groan in hunger with a reply from Dratini's stomach as well. "Boy am I hungry..." said the boy. "Deeerrr..." Dratini said in agreement. "I think we should try looking for some food." Dratini nodded and followed his Trainer in attempt to search for some food.

Luckily for both trainer and Pokémon, around the next bend in the path was a pair of berry trees. One was heavily laden with Pecha berries, five in all, while the other had four Cheri berries in its leafy branches. The berries seemed to glisten in the light. A lone Kakuna hung from the branches of the Cheri plant, but he blended in due to his shiny coloration and would only be visible by the slight glimmer of his shining shell.

Nathan's reaction to the berries was that of pure happiness. "Okay Dratini, let's gather the..." as he said this, he looked at the arm-less and leg-less creature. "Oh..." he said. "You know what? I'll just gather them." As he collected the berries, he failed to notice the large cocoon Pokemon while he was gathering the Cheri Berry.
When Nathan grabbed the last berry, he was stunned when his gaze caught the glistening from the Bug-Type, and his panic caused him to knock down the poor Bug Pokemon causing both Nathan and the Kakuna to land on the ground hard, causing Dratini to flinch in surprise. That didn't make the Kakuna happy.

The shining cocoon Pokémon was startled by the fall, but was able to right himself to look at the trainer. "Kak kaku!" He sounded confused, as if he didn't understand why he was on the ground. After a moment or two, he looked longingly up at Nathan's handful of berries, though with only eyes to express the longing it might have been impossible to tell what he was thinking.

Nathan sat up and started rubbing his back side as Dratini slithered toward his Trainer and the Kakuna to see if they were okay. After stretching a bit, Nathan checked on the Kakuna. "Are you okay?" he asked in curiosity. The Kakuna had already sat up by the time the kid asked that question, and was now eyeing the berries hungrily. Of course, that was really hard to tell, what with Kakuna only having these strange bug eyes and all.
However, once he gave his Dratini a Pecha berry, Nathan heard a sound come from the Kakuna. "Kaku! Kaku!" Then Nathan finally understood that the Kakuna wanted some of the berries too. "Hey, little guy," Nathan said. "You want some too?" He held out a Pecha Berry and a Cheri Berry not knowing how the Pokemon was going to eat it, but still trying to be nice to it. "Here you go!" he said. Dratini was eating the sweet berry happily. "You can have which ever one you want, and if you want another one, just let me know, okay?" The Kakuna seemed to have nodded as it looked at the two berries.

The yellow-green Pokemon eyed the berries suspiciously for just a moment before leaning forward and snapping them up in his opened carapace. "Kukaku!" A Kakuna couldn't smile in the traditional sense, but by body language alone one could tell that this one was pleased. He hopped forward once with a pleading look. Perhaps he wanted to accompany the nice trainer that didn't try to attack him after he fell?
